The lonely hearts site was set up earlier this year but registered more than 1m hits in its first three months. It was introduced because the government was worried that not enough of its university graduates were falling in love with each other. The site is the work of the Social Development Unit SDU , a government organisation dedicated to matchmaking for graduates. The SDU was formed in following official concerns over a drop in Singapore's reproduction rate and an apparent reluctance among professionals to marry and have children. The problem, it seemed, was that graduate men preferred to marry women less educated than themselves, leaving many graduate women unmarried.
